Educationally valuable temporary home for children and families from more than 20 nations

The Frankfurt International School (FIS), one of Europe’s leading international schools, was founded in 1961 by executives of major international companies in the region. In fact it was established as “eingetragener Verein” (registered association) with sovereignty vested in an association comprising all current parents in the school. The FIS was officially recognized as an “allgemeinbildende Ergänzungsschule” (supplementary elementary/secondary school) in August 1997. Since May 2000, also German graduates of the IB (International Baccalaureate Diploma) are entitled to study at German universities.

FIS owns the land covering 65,000 m2 and the school facilities erected in Oberursel. Our Kindergarten is located in a new building on the main campus. Since September 1998, the International School Wiesbaden (ISW) is located on a campus in Wiesbaden-Naurod. Currently about 1,724 students (including ISW) attend our school, starting from Kindergarten through to 12th grade, who come from approx. 55 countries (26 per cent Americans, 24 per cent Germans, 16 per cent Koreans, eight per cent British and five per cent Japanese).

The school employs about 296 teachers and other staff from 26 countries. All teachers possess at least a bachelor’s degree or an equivalent degree as well as a teaching licence from their home country. About 60 per cent of teachers have postgraduate qualifications and 28 per cent have been teaching at our school for more than ten years.

FIS is accredited by the Council of International Schools (UK) and the New England Association of Schools & Colleges (US), and it is a member school of the International Baccalaureate Organization (IB). FIS is entitled to conduct examinations for the IB, the SAT, the PSAT, and the ACT.

International School Wiesbaden

The International School Wiesbaden has developed into an expanding international school. Since moving from Wiesbaden-Dotzheim to Wiesbaden-Naurod in the summer of 1998, a beautiful schoolhouse built according to modern ecological aspects offers room for about 300 students from preschool through to grade 6 inclusively. As of grade 7, the main campus in Oberursel takes over the graduates of grade 6 from Wiesbaden-Naurod. More than 30 teachers instruct children in English, and also in the subjects of Mathematics, Physical Education, Art and Computer Studies. German language of course is an important part of our daily syllabus of instruction. Moreover, children have the option of testing modern communications media in our library, equipped to the latest state-of-the-art, to acquire computer literacy or to try out their technical skills in the sound studio. In addition, the school’s large sport hall offers sufficient space for playing and exercise.
