Travelling through the region without changing – The vision of the Chemnitz Model

The mutual vision of all parties participating in the “Chemnitz Model” is to link the city with the region by public transport without having to change: the passenger boards a modern, comfortable city-suburban rail train at Burgstädt or Mittweide, at Stollberg or Aue and travels directly into the inner city of Chemnitz. In conjunction with existing bus and rail lines, a complex local transport system is thus created. To live in the region and to commute easily into the city for work or shopping – or to live in the city and getting to leisure or recreational areas without difficulty – these are advantages the environment of Central Saxony provides, which now receive a unique support through the Chemnitz Model. The practical prerequisite for this is linking the track systems for railway trains around Chemnitz with the urban system in Chemnitz.

This was realised in 2002 for the first time in Altchemnitz with the pilot line between Chemnitz and Stollberg. Here, a comfortable and light vehicle, usable on both track systems, ensures short travelling times for passengers. With a unified tariff within the traffic association Verkehrsverbund Mittelsachsen, the passenger travels without problems even when crossing district borders.
