Competence and Customer Service – the Firm Foundation of Our Century of Success

Roots of our insurance group

For 82 years now, Wuppertal has been the home of the BarmeniaKrankenversicherung a.G., which was founded as a tradesperson’s health insurer in Leipzig in 1904 before commencing operations in Wuppertal as the “Barmenia Versicherungsbank für Mittelstand und Beamte VaG zu Barmen” (“Barmenia Insurance Bank for Small Business and Civil Servants”). At that time, no one could guess what a dramatic course events would take for this successful insurance enterprise. Over the decades, the group withstood the effects of civil strife, depression and war, and came forth from Germany’s collapse and post-war reconstruction with tried and tested self-confidence. Today, although the challenges have changed, the dedication of this innovative insurance group’s employees to their company and its development – even in the most difficult situations – has not.

Consequently, it is no wonder that the Barmenia enterprises are so well positioned in today’s market. They offer a full range of attractive products in the areas of health, life, accident, motor vehicle, liability and property insurance. A highly effective sales organization and dedicated infrastructure staffers in the respective headquarters and in service centers throughout Germany ensure optimum customer relationships. The extraordinary level of cooperation within the Group, evident at all levels of our organization up to and including boards of management, and in the fact that all three enterprises are led by the same team of executives, generates important synergies, efficiency and cost advantages. The Barmenia insurers meet all criteria for ensuring that they will continue to succeed in their respective markets and realize their vision of becoming – and remaining – the “number-one service insurer”. And the highly respected German ratings agency, ASSEKURATA, which specializes in evaluating the quality of primary insurers, has affirmed in multiple instances in this year alone that we are closing in on our goal: ASSEKURATA rated our health insurer Barmenia Krankenversicherung a.G. “very good” once again in a follow-up rating released last spring; our general insurer Barmenia Allgemeine Versicherungs-AG was rated “very good” in its first-ever rating; and our life insurer Barmenia Lebensversicherung a.G. received an overall rating of “good”, also in a first-time assessment. The key factors in these good to very good overall ratings were the very good to excellent security situation and the good to very good customer orientation. The ASSEKURATA ratings confirm that service and customer orientation, joined with sound financial management, pay off.

A mutual insurer with both tradition and future

Today, the continuing development of the Barmenia Group is entrusted to our four-member Board of Management, headed up since July 1998 by Josef Beutelmann in his dual role as Chairman and General Director. In spite of all the changes necessitated by shifting social priorities and developments in the market, Barmenia’s commitment to continuity is apparent in our firm adherence to our core business principles: support for citizens’ rights to make their own choices for risk provision, support for the concept of “mutual assistance” – with no state intervention – and finally, securing the key role of private insurance as a low-cost, individually oriented alternative or supplement to public social insurance.

Commitment to our region

The role that Barmenia plays in its home region is more than that of a large employer: Barmenia is widely acknowledged as being a responsible corporate citizen that is actively involved in the region both socially and culturally. For years, Barmenia has been providing contemporary artists with a forum where they can present themselves and their work to an appreciative audience.

Many artists, both young and renowned, value this opportunity. In addition to art, Barmenia is dedicated to promoting scholarship, maintaining close ties with the Bergische Universität Wuppertal. For example, the Barmenia Mathematics Prize is awarded annually to deserving graduates. And every two years, talented musicians compete in the Wuppertal Music Competition to win the Barmenia Versicherung Prize, which entails substantial financial awards. And our commitment to our region is demonstrated not least by our decision to renovate and expand our main headquarters in Wuppertal.
